WALZEM CREEK GREEN SPACE
Walzem Creek green space is a linear natural area along channelized Walzem Creek with Texas native plants and butterfly habitat. Channelized and paved as a drainage easement to route fast moving water downstream towards Salado Creek, Walzem Creek still runs through space and time as a defining line of South Texas human and natural geography.
In 2020, over 25 species of native plants grow along the channel with butterflies relying on them for food and habitat. Migrating monarch butterflies use the wild milkweed along the Creek as their host plant.
Walzem Creek channels vital rainwater to the San Antonio River and parallels a corridor of restaurants and stores where the cultures, languages and diverse food traditions of Northeast San Antonio converge.
